Seychelles can be assuming the position of Chair of the Contact Group on Illicit Maritime Actions (CGIMA), following the Contact Group’s second plenary assembly on Thursday fifth September 2024.
The Republic of Kenya, the outgoing Chair, has held the place since January 2020 and has performed a key position in coordinating regional and worldwide efforts to fight piracy and safeguard maritime safety. This would be the second time that Seychelles leads the Contact Group, having first chaired it in 2009 when it was referred to as the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS).
With the renewed menace of piracy off the coast of Somalia, Seychelles will work with regional and worldwide companions to handle this resurgence, alongside tackling different illicit maritime actions corresponding to drug and human trafficking, to make sure the continued security and safety of the Western Indian Ocean.
