The Nationwide Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) says the supervisor of a ferry that capsized on Monday in Lagos has been arrested for alleged negligence and failure to adjust to security laws.
The Lagos Space Supervisor of NIWA, Mrs Sarat Braimah, made the disclosure in an announcement on Tuesday in Lagos.
Braimah mentioned that the arrest was effected because of findings from an in depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
She mentioned that the investigation was carried out by NIWA.
“The arrest is aimed toward guaranteeing accountability and setting a priority for strict adherence to waterways laws to stop future occurrences.
“Additional authorized actions are underway as investigations proceed,” she mentioned.
She mentioned that the ferry supervisor should produce the captain of the boat.
She mentioned that it had been established that the fibre boat veered off its channel and collided with a picket boat because of the obstructed imaginative and prescient of the captain.
Braimah mentioned that the obstruction was largely as a result of masses on the fibre boat.
She added that the boat owned by Solely God Ferry failed to stick to operational security requirements and correct navigation procedures.
