Photographs of Gen Z confronting Kenyan police armed with tear fuel, water cannon and stay rounds have dominated headlines in current weeks. What started as a social media motion opposing a proposed finance invoice has escalated into deadly antigovernment demonstrations nationwide. Regardless of President William Ruto withdrawing the invoice in response to the fervor of the protests, Kenya’s financial challenges, coupled with a large educated youth demographic dealing with scarce job prospects, persistently gas discontent towards the political institution. It appears the nation’s youth motion is simply getting began.
