The cash comes from curiosity generated from the frozen Russian funds, not the funds themselves, which stay locked away from Moscow.
Brussels stated 90 per cent of the cash would go to a central fund used to pay for arms for Ukraine, referred to as the European Peace Facility.
The opposite 10 per cent would go to the EU’s separate Ukraine Facility to help the nation’s reconstruction wants.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shymgal thanked the EU for its help.
“Thanks von der Leyen and the EU to your steadfast help and this important contribution to Ukraine’s defence and reconstruction,” he stated on social media.
“We’re grateful to the EU for taking this important step. This switch will assist us strengthen our defence capabilities,” the Ukrainian defence ministry stated.
Russia nonetheless condemned the “unlawful” transfer.
“That is cause, after all, for considerate actions in response to such unlawful choices, that are applied by the European Union,” Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman advised journalists.
