President Cyril Ramaphosa has, by way of Part 174(3) of the Structure of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, appointed present Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya as Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa with impact from 1 September 2024.
The appointment follows the President’s session, in accordance with Constitutional prescripts, with the Judicial Service Fee and the leaders of political events represented within the Nationwide Meeting.
In a letter addressed to Chief Justice Raymond Zondo on 22 February 2024, President Ramaphosa knowledgeable the Judicial Service Fee of his intention to nominate Deputy Chief Justice Maya because the Chief Justice of the Republic upon the expiry of the time period of workplace of Chief Justice Zondo on 31 August 2024.
The President invited the Judicial Service Fee to offer its views on the suitability of Justice Maya to carry the workplace of Chief Justice.
Discharging its consultative mandate set out in Part 174(3) of the Structure, the Fee interviewed Justice Maya on 21 Could 2024 to determine her suitability to be appointed as Chief Justice of the Republic.
